Simpson Equine Management Services (SEMS) is a training facility for Arabian horses. We specialize with all In-Hand horses, mostly active with halter horses. We pride our program here at SEMS with the turn out of each and every horse that enters into the show ring and the results that each and every horse has while being in our care.
The husband and wife team of Rob & Jen Simpson, along with Jen's mother, handle all day to day activities that go on at the farm.
Jen Simpson has been a horse woman all of her life. Starting at a young age Jen fell in love with horses and that love has not diminished, only grown stronger. The Arabian horse has always been the center of attention to Jen as she has grown from a casual rider to a competitive rider in various disciplines. Jen has a great eye for talent and has been given a gift from God to take a talented horse and bring out the best of that horse. She is very meticulous in her day to day preparations and more importantly, she always has an eye on the health of each and every horse. All horses of age for the beginning of a performance career are started with ground work from Jen while they are in halter training.
Rob Simpson has been involved in the Arabian horse world for 10 years. Growing up in a horse family has given Rob a natural talent with his ability to understand each horse. Over the past 10 years Rob has been blessed with the opportunities to work with some of the top trainers in the business: David Boggs, Greg Knowles, Eileen Verdieck, Ted Carson, Steve Dady, and a few others.
The program centers around 4 major components that are the equation for success:
1) THE HORSE: We have been successful at this point because of the quality of horses that clients have brought to us. There is only so much that can be done by us or by anyone that can make a horse better. When a horse has been bred with quality in mind and that breeding comes to fruition that is something that is in the hands of God. We have been blessed with the talent that has come into our barns and we thank each and every client for these special horses.
2) TRAINING: We believe that with proper training and attention to detail that a horse will be able to maximize their talent when given the chance. It is our goal to put a strong foundation behind each horse that will allow the horse to prosper both physically and mentally when pushed to higher limits. This foundation will also allow the horse to have stronger ties with people after they are out of our care.
3) CONDITIONING: SEMS has a high standard set on the conditioning of halter horses and any In-Hand horses. With a proper conditioning program that is set to allow each horse to grow stronger by the day in all categories, we feel this is what will allow the horse to show the part of the "hard stand up" that is sought after in the states. Each horse is set to a program that consist of workouts on the treadmill, the pony field, the free lunge arena, the hot walker, the round pen, and the wonderful turn out field. All horses will change their routine daily so they can stay fresh with the program that they are on. The conditioning program at SEMS is set up to allow the horse to start at a low level of stress when it arrives, increase the stress of the workout as it continues to prepare for the show, and then refresh the week before the show.
4) NUTRITION: There are many factors that are used into determining the state that a horse is at when they are in our program. We keep track of the horse’s weight, hair coat, feet, and energy levels daily to evaluate how a horse is doing nutritionally. Weekly these horses are checked to see how they have progressed from the week before, or if they need changes in any of these areas for maximum nutrition.
SEMS is blessed by the use of a beautiful facility that is nestled in the Shenandoah mountains in the city of Amissville, Virginia. The farm is 25 acres with 5 of those acres being in woods. Their are 3 barns that consist of 15 stalls. The main barn has 8 stalls that are 14X14. The barn is climate controlled and has air flow coming from all 4 sides. The stallion barn has 5 stalls that look out into the mountains for a relaxing view that the stallions enjoy on a daily basis. The turn out barn has 2 stalls. This barn was originally a broodmare barn with access to 1 acres turn out fields at free choice. The stallion barn is also where we condition horses. The back side of the barn is where the stalls are, looking out into the mountains. Then inside is where we have groom rooms, the hot walker, and the treadmill. To the right of this barn is a 60x60 covered round pen.
There are 9 turn out fields on the farm that allows us to rotate horses every day for turn out. These fields are surrounded by Centaur fencing that keeps maintenance to a minimum and safety to a maximum. Each field has a different use: some of the fields have different digrees of slopes that allows for enjoyment and a great workout, while others are flat that are helpful with horses who are not able to work on hills.
Fence to fence with the farm is the reproduction facility, Equine Reproduction Concepts. This allows us to have full use of the best doctors and equipment we could need when it comes to breeding the stallions that are here. Equine Reproduction Concepts deals with everything from breeding, embryo transfer, stallion collection, frozen semen, to phantom training. Having them next to us allows us to take the stallions off the farm to collect so that they can keep their thoughts on training when they are here, and they don't have to go far to have this done.
